Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul aka The King Of Spoilers and this video we're breaking down everything you need to know about the latest season of The Crown.
The series pulls on a tonne of real life events and though it's often stated by the creative team that this should be viewed as a dramatisation, it definitely lines up a lot with what really happened. I'm gonna be dropping in and out of the storyline and stating the true events alongside the general plot but hopefully this helps to paint out the true picture of what happened in the season and beyond it.
Episode 1 begins all the way back in 1979 and things become complicated when Lord Mountbatten is killed in an attack carried out by the IRA. This real life organisation first appeared in the late 60s and it attempted to end the British Rule over Northern Ireland.
Ireland had very much been ransacked by the troubles and my grandfather who was Irish actually came to England due to the conflicts and attacks that were rife throughout the country. They claimed responsibility for this and very much rebelled against the empire which had led to famine, poverty and destabilisation.
The fallout of this attack alongside the themes of power are very much the back drop of Season 4 and we watch as the family question their role in the public eye.
Clearly the IRA are seeking change and they aren't the only ones either.
Season Four also sees the appointment of the first female primeminister who I'm sure you're well aware was Margaret Thatcher. Nicknamed The Iron Lady, Thatcher carried this reputation due to her almost unfeeling and unapologetic actions.
In many ways Thatcher and The Queen mirror one another and they faced the same difficulties when first gaining power. Men tried to force them down certain paths but they stood strong infront of these and refused to be overpowered.
Gillian Anderson plays her expertly throughout the season and you almost forget that she's a woman who is despised by a vast majority of people...not my proudest wan...want of a person in power...
Being from the North East me and my family very much have a certain view of Thatcher and though I'm still not a fan of her I think the season does an incredible job of portraying the ins and outs of her time in power.
Thatcher was very much responsible for several colliery closures and this led to the miners strike of 1984. Coal was slowly becoming more and more unprofitable and the shutdown of this industry led to a lot of poverty and hardships for those affected by it.
Clearly she is a complicated character and there's almost the sense of the patriarchy being examined with us questioning how certain aspects of society have to be remade for the new world and if it's worth the cost.
I know that many still like like her and if you disagree with my opinion or not I'm sure we can both agree that she's still viewed as a very divisive character.
(Episode 4) Thatcher at one point also brings up the fact that her son Mark has been captured in Algeria and the Queen is quite shocked to see her state that he is her favourite child even though she has twins.
This makes her start to question who her favourite child is and speaking of them, the season too puts Anne and Charle's respective relationships in the spotlight.

I felt like Queen Elizabeth allowed the men who filled leadership roles to bowl her over when she first became Queen as a young woman. Repeatedly we saw her cave under their pressure, even when she had originally had a different outlook. The Crown has resurfaced all the disdain for Charles and Camilla. Those that lived it now have refreshed memories and those too young now deeply understand how awful that man is.

Charles wanted to marry Camilla from the get-go. But, instead of relying on these ersatz blog channels which do minimal research, people should read the biographies on these wankers. The Queen Mother, who was the real power behind ER II, didn't think Camilla was suitable due to her premarital sexual relations. It is well-recorded that, when Camilla first met Charles, she reminded him of the liaison between one of her ancestors and one of Charles's, adding the words, "so, how about it?" Keep in mind that Camilla's first husband was involved in an affair with Princess Anne. Cozy, no? It was the Queen Mother's influence that prevented Charles from marrying Camilla.

outstanding wrap up. I binged the 4 seasons in 4 days, and as a descendent of Scots and Brits, now living in the U.S. I'm still a fan and love the monarchy. I have the utmost respect for Her Majesty -- and admire her hard work. I just wish things had been different for Diana and Charles. I'm no fan of Camilla's. I adore ADORE the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their most wonderful children. Long live the Queen. Thank you for this excellent page.

The show is great. Shows how the royal family really didn’t do much beside being this rich family and that the queen really doesn’t have power they just do what is told. When Diana came into the picture ppl feel in love with her and is the reason why she is still remember and the most important person because she was for the ppl. Where as the royal where very cold ppl it was until Diana they learn from her. honestly don’t like prince Charles nor Camilla I think they had something to do with death of Diana especially prince Charles cuz he was jealous of Diana. Wish Diana was still alive

Neither William or Harry's marriages will be shown in The Crown. The producer has already said this. My guess is it ends its run set in 2002, when both the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret die, or in 2005, when Charles and Camilla marry

I didn't know much about Diana growing up. All I knew is she was beloved around the world as a little boy. It wasn't until I saw this season I thought to myself, "No way. Did this REALLY happen?!" Then, I go looking up who Diana was and what she'd done, and 90% of everything portrayed about her was a true story. Blew my mind. Funny enough, "I" fell in love with her, some 20+ years after her death. Not because of what the show portrays, but because of who she was in real life. There hasn't been a public figure like her - royalty or not - since. Not even close to the level of compassion, empathy, and love she genuinely expressed. She was very much a princess, yet, very much human. She somehow struck a perfect balance of both, not being "too" common nor out of touch. Larger than life, yet relatable; approachable. I kept stopping the show going, "No way. That's GOT to be fabricated." Nope. It was true. Meeting the kids in AID's hospitals and being the first major public figure to touch a child with AID's when it was thought back then to be contagious by touch, was incredible; inspiring many to adopt aid's children. Her style was second-to-none. Her charm, wit and humor. That woman was just fantastic lol. Perfect? No one else. But that's what made her so charming. I think a big part of Charles jealousy was that he himself was not allowed to be as free-spirited and opinionated as Diana was and continued to be despite the pressures. She held ot her guns. He did not and caved in. Charles had the makings of a young charmer, but had his voice stifled. He was more jealous of the VOICE she had, then he was of her popularity. The audacity of her to BE human and BE honest with herself and others made him resent her. Her being more popular was the surface level stuff. He, too, would have been very beloved had he been allowed to simply be his true self to a large extent, but when you've been raised without your mother, without love and affection, it's hard to project it, if ever. Diana's background as child care worker massively contributed to her ability to be human with other humans. She had that advantage.

The sad thing is majority of them can't even let go of the title and the perks, even if they are miserable and cant be with their true love. We have a saying, you can compare people to weeds, "bad people lives longer", why? So that they can suffer more. I feel really sad for Diana and her untimely passing, but she is too good to feel the wordly and intentional pain from the people she expected to protect her. Forcing Charles to marry Diana is the the one thing that made me dislike the Queen, and I wish that Camilla and Charles never find contentment.

Charles is a stupid bastard, clearly trying to ruin the marriage on purpose to “escape” it. Yes, the fact that he couldn’t marry the women he loved is a crime no individual to endure. But to then take it out on Diana is scummy at best. Then to envy her because she became very popular with the public is just flat out cruel. She tried time and time again to win Charles over with sweet and affectionate things, but he has the audacity to take these things and twist them to make them seem “childish antics”. She puts in effort to make the marriage work and Charles continues to make her suffer for it. No sympathy for this bastard of a man. I hope he’s now happy married the women he truly loves, that’s sarcasm if you couldn’t tell. Because let me tell you, I think Diana truly loved him at one point.

Thatcher tried to get the UK and it's citizens to stand on their own two feet, and stop living off government handouts. England use to be the most powerful in the world. That changed, once they started to become the socialist country they are today. Criticise the royals all you want, but even now, they bring in around $1.8 billion a year from tourism. That money is needed to continue on and pay for all the government programs the UK has. Personally, I don't think Diana and Charles should have married. They both acted like spoiled children during their marriage. Diana's demise was really her own doing. She jetted around with her muslim lover, which a lot of people suspected would not end well. Can't blame that on the royal family, or Charles...

For 10 years (since 1982) Camilla had secret off-the-record telephone conversations with a reporter of the Sun newspaper, Stuart Higgins - a curious relationship which illustrated the web of understanding and complicity in the circle around Charles. [Stuart Higgins recalled]: "I didn't sense that she and the Prince were out of touch. I talked to her once a week about Diana and Charles. She guided me on things that were not true or things that were off the beam". How Camilla knew what happened behind closed doors between C&D since 1982? Charles and Camilla destroyed Diana.

Charles is the biggest horse's ass since Edward abdicated the throne. Diana was a pawn in this whole situation, not an innocent of course, but a pawn nevertheless. Diana was killed by the "crown" even though they distance themselves from it, she had to die for the Brits to accept Camilla as Charles' wife, and since his ex-spouse was dead he could remarry freely. Too bad he didn't have the balls to marry Camilla in the first place and save everyone from this disgusting drama and ruining Diana's life. Oh, that's right, Charles never had any balls to begin with. Some monarch he will make. I feel sorry for the UK if he does become king someday.

I'm 20, didnt really grow up with the whole Diana frenzy. My take goes along the observation Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother mention at the end if the season, things changed after the abdication, which unfortunately had a long spiraling of people having to grown up fast, try to make their own stand while staying liked and following the rules and today is the result of all of that. Charles needed something that his mother and family didnt give, so he takes his agression out on Diana, no she didnt deserve that but I also agree with Phillip that Diana didn't get who the royals really were at that time. Thankfully they've changed some, not enough but again I'm 20, I like watching it because for me it's more history than my "past"

Princess Dina never really wanted that role in the first place. She liked Charles for a time but after she figured out who he really was it was really difficult. In the photos and videos I’ve seen she always seems to carry a weight. I have no doubt Queen Elizabeth knew about Camilla and well as the queen often does she stayed silent and kept her head down. Princess Dina knew the power she had over the public and figured the best way to escape the hell she was in was letting people know what was going on. She did say she told the queen and she didn’t help so she went to something that will. Afterwards it looked like the weight had been lifted. Unfortunately she ended up dying. I do not believe Charles cares for anyone but himself and he makes it very clear.

Visually the Crown always ends in two ways. S1 & S3 ends with a solitary frame of Elizabeth and she's kind of imploded her family in the name of the crown by the end of the season and then the second finale S2 & S4 shows a happier, more contented Elizabeth surrounded by her family in the family portrait. Except this time, the camera shifts focus to Diana at the end. I think to visually suggest that her story isn't over yet. We'll have a new, older Diana but there is no closure to her arc whereas the rest of cast (S3&4) have found a modicum of closure by the end of the series. It's subtle but powerful.

Watching The Crown has been surreal for me because it takes place over the course of my mother's and my lifetimes. The Coronation occurred just a week or two after my mother was born, so she grew up with her early reign. I was born in '76, so I grew up with the antics of Charles and Diana. In fact, I couldn't get away from their images all over the television and magazine covers, not to mention the merchandise (commemorative plates, anyone?). Watching The Crown provides context to all that, and provides a bit of a history lesson. I already can't wait until next season.

Thanks for sharing and doing this video 😊. I am a new subscriber to your channel and came across your video. I feel like this season was disappointing compared to seasons before just my opinion. I really thought season 1 and 2 were very good. Season 3 is pretty good in parts I know the creator of this show also wrote the screenplay for "The Queen" the film stating Helen Mirren. That was also really good. The acting is always good in this show but overall I feel it's lost its mojo for me. So not sure I will watch season 5. I would of loved to of seen more of Princess Margaret's development here as Helen Botham Carter was amazing in this show 😊. I also feel there was too much on emphasis on Charles and Diana. The episodes with Margaret Thatcher were very interesting to watch and again Gillian Anderson played her very well. Meryl Streep did such a great job in Iron Lady it's hard to imagine anyone else playing her but for me the highlights of this show this season were Gillian Anderson and Helena Bonham Carter.
