It'd be interesting to see you react to BBC's Ghosts. It's not a period drama per say, but it's full of characters from different time periods. It's made by the same team behind Horrible Histories, so you know they know what they're doing.

They definitely should have brought in a Chinese designer for Mulan. As one who has researched Song Dynasty clothing, finding resources in English is incredibly hard. The best resources are all in Chinese and haven't been translated.

In the Alienist, there's a scene where Dakota Fanning is getting undressed - she's not wearing a chemise (or similar garment) between her corset and skin, and it's so tight that it leaves marks on her skin. It really pushes the idea that corsets were instruments of torture.

I realize corsets might be a part of history, but given how unhealthy we now know them to be, it isn't surprising that they aren't used by modern actresses. My understanding as well is that corsets were like push-up bras in that not all women wanted to wear them: many women chose not to, so it would make sense the main character from Ammonite would not.

If there’s one thing I can’t stand is when directors try to modernise a historical show/movie. I was watching Mary Queen of Scots which had a huge feminist take on it. At first I was like this should be fine, it’s two female monarchs, I can see why. But there were sooooo many inaccuracies because of it.

I am far from a expert when it comes to historical hair, makeup, clothing but watching this made me smile and laugh throughout because it reinforced things I noticed when watching many of these films. It goes to show how important these things are, that to someone so inexperienced they took away from the film

I rewatched a bit of The Greatest Showman after this because your blasphemous category is what made me realise why I'm not fully enamoured with it. The hair, makeup, and even some of the women's dresses just pull me right out of the time period and I was wondering if you might ever include it in a video like this

I sort of wondered why, given her disclaimer, that she spent any time on Mulan, rather than just putting up the fine link reference? Another one that goes more into the costumes as well is ispost.info/flow/xcVvpaiJi2eZpqo/v-deo.html. I suspect that since she made the valiant effort to at least try to research the material (specifically the T'ang dynasty, although one of the criticisms is that the costumes were all over the place in terms of period) that she was sort of "Dammit, I spent all that time on the research and I am NOT going to have it go to waste!"
XOXheartAmy 8 dögum síðan
I am like 80% sure some intern on The Great came into work one day and was like "hey so there's this youtuber called Bernadette Banner and if you keep doing the poor-fitting clothes and the half-ponytails she will tear you apart on the internet in front of 1.04 million people..." and they quickly got their acts together also Ammonite was about a real historical figure: Mary Anning discovered the first full Icthyosaur skeleton at the age of eleven, and then the first Plesiosaur at twenty-two, the first pterosaur, and all manner of other fossils including the identification of copralites as fossilised faeces. She wasn't allowed to join the Geological Society because gasp! she was a woman, and she died of cancer a couple of months shy of her forty-eighth birthday. Her life spanned 1799 through 1847 - the blue dress in the film appears to be based on a pre-1842 painting of her.

Great video! I'm just wondering why you reserve the "design choice" category exclusively for fantasy films? A designer might choose to knowingly veer away from historical accuracy for a whole range of artistic reasons, not only because there's a fantasy element. I'm thinking specifically of Coppola's Marie Antoinette which used intentionally anachronistic details (and music, etc.) to establish a clear connection between the French royal court and modern-day celebrity culture, but that's just one example. Even if a film is about real people or events, the costumes still also serve a larger narrative and there are plenty of potential instances where an artistic decision might trump historical accuracy without veering all the way into fantasy or sci-fi.

Hi, I watched Antebellum and its not supernatural at all, the premise was that antebellum re-enactors were kidnapping people to keep on their re-enactment plantation. It was all supposed to be real, the mode of story telling was just highlighting the surreal attitudes of White supremacists. And the flash back was really long but it was all based in modern reality, albeit a fictional story.

Could you review the Criterion Collections WAR AND PEACE? It was a sweeping movie that was done by the USSR in the 60s. It allegedly had over 20,000 extras.. and won for best foreign language film in 1966. I am watching it and it is a gorgeous film.. to me.. some of the costumes look ok from a distance. but the fabrics are cheap.. stitching, cheap and detailing cheap.. some dresses are better than others.. some hairstyles.. more accurate than others (But it was a 1960s film and for SOME REASON no one was accurate with hairstyles in any historical drama.. I mean you look at even Hogan's Hero's and all these women from the 1940s had bouffants! wtf? or flips.. LOLOL. BUt it would be interesting to have that in the mix. I HIGHLY recommend watching this film. It is really well done overall.. It is on the CRITERION COLLECTION website...

Shouldn't The Great be It was a design choice instead of Pretty Good? 🤔 As mentioned in the video too, it was full of modern clothes 😀 Besides the modern outfits, Catherine's 18th century gowns were not accurate either. Catherine arrived to Russia in the 1740s, and the Russian court gowns at that time didn't look like anything Catherine wears. The silhouette was different. They had wider necklines and the sleeves were fuller and made of lace, not like those thin sleeves the show's gowns always have. images.app.goo.gl/F6ce9ixHUCkAgLGN8 images.app.goo.gl/ZA5t3NM1pcwVhNNk6 images.app.goo.gl/Uh764e3iEppREvK66 images.app.goo.gl/oTmSEm2X8mJEqucC7 images.app.goo.gl/on4pz73WQpEXCkfUA The gowns in the show seem much later 18th century, when Catherine the Great was already much older. I like the costumes in the show, but surely they are more inaccurate than to be on the 2nd level of accuracy out of 5 levels?

In my opinion, in regards to the Alienist. The male cloths are really damn good, for 1896. I checked and did some personal research of the cloths from, the 1890s and for the males, they got spot of stuff correct. Especially the starch detachable shirt collars. Also the gala/evening wear for Lazlo and Moore were very, very good! But the female cloths were not up to par, but the fabric designs they used. On Sara's dresses were correct, to history. But hey this also won a golden globe for "best costume design" so ok then.

You need to get into Chinese historical dramas. The costumes are amazing. There was a drama a few years back called The Story of Yanxi Palace which had the most incredible costumes, they used traditional embroiderers to create the most elaborate (and, as far as I can tell, incredibly accurate) gowns, and it created a fashion trend in China for featuring some more traditional items or motifs in your dress, similar to the Bridgerton effect here in the west.

This is fascinating and I agree with a lot of your conclusions. However, coming from a completely different angle, I'm not sure that any kind of period accuracy can ever be achieved in Anglophone historical drama, as no contemporary actor ever uses the spoken accents that were used in the past. The 'John Adams' mini-series made a few years ago attempted this but was erratic in its choices. So however good the characters look, they rarely actually ever sound right. A working-class Briton from 1830 is normally voiced as a modern British cockney, in order that the audience can 'place' these characters in the social order. The exaggeration of interwar upper-class British speech is rarely attempted because it now sounds affected and rather comic. So is the search for any kind of overall accuracy valid when it can only be achieved in specific areas...?

Kind of upset that you didn't mention that Ammonite was based on a real life person. Mary Anning is considered the first woman paleontologists and discovered many unknown fossil organism. As an undergrad, I received a pin with Mary Anning on it from a mentor. The pin symbolizes that, despite the men getting more awards and funding, women paleontologists are successful and support one another. Anyone wearing that pin was up for a discussion on what it's like to be a woman in paleontology, the personal sacrifices they've made and willing to give pep talks to aspiring women paleontologists.

I don't think I realized just how well Bernadette knows clothes until I watched this video. Her being able to tell a difference of a couple of years by the shape of the sleeves is like--well, my specialty is 50s-70s American vehicles, and this is like me knowing the difference between a '65 and a '66 C10 by where the badge is. And this woman's knowledge covers far more than 30 years and extends much farther back in history. What a legend.

I think that unless the hair&make-up is distractingly modern, we should let it slide. As a film-maker your can't alienate the viewer. If we are to be consistent we should say that none of the movies depicting pre-20th century life are accurate cause everyone has all of their teeth, no sailor is missing an ear or finger due to frostbite, almost no veteran soldier has any scars on their body from saber blows or musket shot and so on...
